Flames Shoot From American Airlines Plane Over Columbus, Ohio

An American Airlines flight headed to Phoenix, Arizona, was rerouted back to its departure airport in Columbus, Ohio, after the aircraft’s engine experienced mechanical issues on Sunday, April 23, according to authorities.

Video recorded by Ben Nines shows flames spitting near the aircraft’s turbines. Nines told Storyful that he was on a morning jog when he heard the aircraft above.

[I] heard a loud, deep and pulsing sound like a speed boat skipping on waves or a wood chipper. I couldn’t see anything for about five seconds but the sound was clearly getting closer and it was disbursing enough that I pulled my phone out."

The commercial plane was in the air for approximately 39 minutes before returning to John Glenn International Airport according to flight tracking website FlightAware.

Local media reported the incident was being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration. Credit: Ben Nines via Storyful
