Flood warning removed after River Tyne bursts its banks at Quayside

The worst of Monday and Tuesday's floods are now over, despite the River Tyne briefly breaching its banks on Tuesday afternoon.

Flood barriers were put up on a 185-metre stretch of the River Tyne on Monday afternoon, after a flood warning was issued for the area between the Broad Chare and the High Level bridge. They remained in place on Tuesday, though were not enough to stop the river briefly spilling onto paths under the High Level and Swing Bridges on Tuesday afternoon.

Environment Agency teams were on site to pump water away and to monitor the levels of the water. Though there was an overspill, there was never any real danger that buildings on the Quayside were under threat from the waters.

The flood warning for the Quayside also covered Low Walker, Lower Derwenthaugh Industrial Estate and Willington. However, it was removed at 18.25 on Tuesday afternoon, though a flood alert for the wider area remains in place.

The Government's 'check for flooding page' read: "We do not expect to see similar impacts for tomorrow’s high tides. However, we will continue to monitor the forecast closely and may issue further alerts and warnings if necessary.

"Continue to take care on waterside roads and footpaths and don't put yourself in unnecessary danger."
