It's set to be a warm and sunny weekend in Greater Manchester - before temperatures heat up even more next week.

According to Met Office forecasters, temperatures will reach highs of around 20C today (Saturday) with sunny spells forecast throughout the afternoon. It is expected to feel even warmer on Sunday as the mercury climbs to 22C from around 3pm.

After an overcast start to the morning, sunny spells are forecast for much of the afternoon with the finest weather expected into the early evening. From Monday, temperatures will get even warmer with the mercury reaching highs of 25C.

Forecasters have predicted that there could be a 'possible heatwave' next week in some parts of the UK if mid-20 temperatures 'remain in situ for three consecutive days'. The majority of the UK 'will experience the highest temperatures so far this year', the Met Office added.

Dan Rudman, Met Office deputy chief meteorologist, said: "After a brief, less settled interlude today and tomorrow, fine conditions will return by Sunday and into the beginning of next week. For much of the UK this will be accompanied by a boost in temperatures with many places reaching the mid-20Cs.

"Some central and southern areas are likely to see temperatures approaching the values needed for heatwave conditions. Heatwave conditions need to remain in situ for three consecutive days, and by the beginning to middle of next week it is possible that some parts of the UK could be reaching heatwave thresholds.

"However, whether or not everyone experiences heatwave thresholds, the majority of the UK will experience the highest temperatures so far this year."

On the outlook for the North West from Monday to Wednesday, the Met Office said: "Dry with warm sunny spells Monday. Turning more widely warm or very warm and humid Tuesday, with sunny spells and the chance of a shower.

"Possibly a thundery breakdown Wednesday."
