Futurama exclusive clip: Hermes Conrad comes up with a solution to a new pandemic

Futurama has often parodied real life events over the years, and its 2023 revival will do so again by examining on the events of the Covid pandemic with a comedic lens.

In an exclusive clip shared with Yahoo UK from Monday 4 September's episode, titled Rage Against the Vaccine, future Earth is being ravaged by a pandemic caused by the spread of a deadly virus but Planet Express employee Hermes Conrad (Phil LaMarr) has an idea for how to tackle it.

Coming to speak to his wife LaBarbara (Dawnn Lewis), Hermes tells her to prepare for a trip to New New Orleans, where he hopes to meet people who can perform voodoo which he believes will help stop the virus from spreading any further.

LaBarbara is shocked by the notion and warns Hermes of the consequences as voodoo impacted her own family in the past, but her husband is determined to try regardless of the risk.

The Disney+ animation is expected to deliver a comic yet cutting criticism of the public and global response to the pandemic and the failings of those in power to adequately tackle the problem in its new episode.

Rage Against the Vaccine sees New New York declare victory over Covid-2019 finally in 3022, but a large celebration in Central Park becomes a super-spreader event for an entirely different virus, which is given the name Explovid-3022.

This virus is described as one that causes extreme anger, which the episode summary adding that it leads to "anger at masks, vaccines… pretty much everything".

Hermes will take centre stage in the episode, with him taking a disorderly fight-flight to New New Orleans to try and discover the secrets of the mysterious city and how it may save the world from Explovid-3022, and along the way he will even meet his arch-nemesis Barbados Slim.

Matt Groening and David X. Cohen first created Futurama in 1999, and its 2023 revival is the second time the show has been brought back to the small screen.

The new series saw the return of LaMarr, and fellow cast members John DiMaggio, Billy West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, and David Herman.

Rage Against the Vaccine premieres on Monday, 4 September on Disney+, and new episodes of Futurama air every Monday.
