Getafe president Angel Torres appears to have suggested that Mason Greenwood will agree to a return next season but underlined that the decision ultimately lies with Manchester United.

The attacker spent last season on loan at the Spanish club, scoring 10 times and providing six assists. MEN Sport revealed this week that the forward could be one of the first players to leave Old Trafford this summer.

Juventus and Napoli are interested in the winger, as are Borussia Dortmund, while reports elsewhere claim Lazio are to table a bid for the 22-year-old. Greenwood only has a year left on his deal at United.

Speaking in February, Sir Jim Ratcliffe left the door open for Greenwood’s return to United, despite the club stating in August that the player would continue his career away from Old Trafford.

That conclusion was made following an internal club investigation regarding Crown Prosecution Service charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm against the footballer, which were dropped in February 2023. Greenwood has always denied the allegations.

United had initially intended to integrate the forward back into the squad before a backlash from supporters sparked a reversal, leading to his loan exit to Getafe on transfer deadline day in September.

Getafe have always hinted at their intention to try and secure another deal for Greenwood, and now club president Torres has made clear his transfer hopes. He appears to have claimed that the player intends to stay on at the club.

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, he said: “We have fifteen in the squad plus Greenwood, who we hope to give good news about soon and I hope will stay another year.

“As the press says, there are many offers, and we will abide by what Manchester United say. It looks like he will continue for another year. Every day that passes, there are more possibilities, but you have to be cautious.”
