'There's a queue for the queue' - Huge line for Glastonbury snakes around Worthy Farm as gates open

Excited festivalgoers arriving at Glastonbury this morning are facing long waits in the sun as people are being forced to queue to get into the main queue.

People arriving at the festival site in Somerset have been met with extremely long queues, with one group from Liverpool being met with queues backing out of the festival site.

Today, Wednesday, 26 June, marks the opening day of the historic festival, with organiser Emily Eavis unbolting the green gates to Worthy Farm while a brass band played. She then led revellers in a countdown before they surged onto the field in the hopes of securing a prime camping spot.

Festival-goers can expect “mostly warm, dry and settled” weather for the next five days but scattered showers could begin from day one and last until the end of the weekend, according to the Met Office.

This year’s event will see headline performances from global stars including pop singer Dua Lipa, British rock band Coldplay and American soul singer SZA, while Canadian country star Shania Twain will play the coveted Legends slot.

Alison, 30, from Aigburth, said: “There’s a queue for the queue. 7am we parked, half 8 joined the back of a queue and we're not at barriers yet still queuing along a car park. It’s very hot, not massively rowdy. The people behind us have cracked out a beer though”.

The ECHO spoke to people leaving Merseyside this morning for the festival, with Megan Vaughan, 27, from Old Swan heading down with her friends. She said: "I’ve been going every year since 2015. It’s the best festival, the best place, the best people. It’s a vibe from start to finish."

Megan added: "Over the past few years there’s been more and more Scousers going but it wasn’t really like that at the beginning. People have probably got onto how good it is."
