Greek Army Uses Bulldozer to Evacuate Residents From Flooded Town

The Greek Army used a bulldozer to evacuate residents from heavily flooded areas in central Greece on Thursday, September 7, after torrential rain swamped the region.

Some stranded residents climbed onto their roofs to avoid the rising floodwater, Kathimerini reported.

The “biblical” rainfall has left at least three dead, with three people missing, Kathimerini reported.

Speaking to local media, Palamas Mayor Giorgos Sakellariou said the water had reached heights of at least 1.5 meters (5 feet). “Citizens are trapped in their homes, we will have drownings,” he said.

Footage filmed in the town of Palamas Karditsa showed houses partially submerged and vehicles nearly completely covered by floodwater.

The National Meteorological Service forecast heavy rain and thunderstorms until Thursday afternoon in Thessaly, northern Evia, and parts of central Greece. Credit: HNDGS via Storyful
