Halifax Panthers close in on French dual-sport athlete after impressive Super League trial

Halifax Panthers are hoping to bolster their squad ahead of their Championship clash with Doncaster with the addition of Frenchman Mathieu Pons. Rugby League Live understands Fax are working on a deal to sign the powerful outside back, who has made an impressive transition to the sport in a short space of time.

The 22-year-old is still in the first 12 months of his rugby league career, having initially developed as an athlete in an MMA environment. Last season saw him play in France's Elite 1 competition for St Gaudens. He ended the campaign with an impressive ten tries in 14 appearances.

That caught the eye of Super League club Hull KR, who last month offered him a trial period at Craven Park. During that spell, he played for the club's reserve grade and scored two tries in an eye-catching victory over Leeds Rhinos.

Having left an impression on the coaching staff at Rovers, it's understood that he could now secure a permanent deal at the club next season. But for now, it is expected that he will head to The Shay and be part of Liam Finn's side, where he will be able to gain further experience in the sport at a competitive level.

Pons could debut for the Panthers this Sunday when they host Doncaster in what is an important fixture for Liam Finn's side. Halifax are currently in the Championship relegation places after a disappointing start to the season in which they have won just two of their opening eight league games.

The departure of Greg Eden to Featherstone Rovers has caused further depth issues within the squad, something Pons' arrival will help to address. But beyond that, Fax are believed to be actively in the recruitment market to bring fresh faces into the squad as they continue to show support for their new head coach.

Finn, it is believed, has the full support of the club, and the current focus is on strengthening the squad wherever possible after a frustrating start to the year. With Leeds Rhinos set to welcome back players from injury this week, the club could also call upon their dual-reg partners when they play the Dons.
