Hayden Hackney handed 'top-six' Premier League prediction amid Man City star comparison

Middlesbrough hot prospect Hayden Hackney can play at the very highest level in the Premier League, according to team-mate Jonny Howson.

The Boro veteran has watched the England Under-21's progress on Teesside with growing admiration, and has predicted a big future for the 21-year-old. After a season plagued by injuries, Hackney is looking forward to playing a big role in Michael Carrick's promotion challenge at the Riverside in the coming season.

There has been interest from Premier League sides already, with Tottenham said to be monitoring his situation, but indications are that the player is happy on Teesside. Howson has had a first-hand view of Hackney's development from inside the Boro dressing room, and insists he can reach the very top.

“I think Hayden can go on to become whatever he wants," Howson said. "I think he will definitely play in the Premier League, but I’ll be honest, I think he could play for a top-half or even top-six clubs.

"With the potential that he’s got, and the attitude he has got, there’s no reason that can’t be achievable for him. He needs things to work out for him as well, because let’s be honest, you need that bit of luck or the right door opening at the right time."

Howson even drew comparison with former Leeds United youth team-mate Fabian Delph, who went on to play for Aston Villa, Manchester City and England - although stressed they are very diffierent players.

"I look at a different sort of player but another young lad I played with which was Fabian Delph," he explained. "He was a couple of years younger than me and we came through the academy at Leeds United and he went on to play for Man City. I look at his breakthrough and Hayden’s, yeah, they’re different style players, but they both have the right attitude, which I think is a massive factor.

"I’ve spoken a few times on Hayden - since he came into the group his attitude has been top notch. He’s remained level-headed and not changed one bit, and that is sometimes what can take you to certain places.

"We all know the ability that he has got because it’s there for all to see. You also need the mindset, the determination and the work ethic and he has got it all. So, if certain doors open for him, he’s got the potential to go on and do that if he wants to.”
