David Brooks saw his EFL Championship play-off final outing cut short in brutal circumstances on Sunday afternoon - and could barely contain his emotions.

The Wales international looked to be fighting back the tears as he was withdrawn midway through the first half of Southampton's crucial clash with Leeds United at Wembley, having suffered a suspected shoulder injury following an earlier collision.

Brooks, who's been a key part of Russell Martin's plans at St Mary's Stadium since joining on loan in January, attempted to carry on, but had to be replaced a few moments later, with Sam Edozie coming on to replace him off the bench.

The 26-year-old looked visibly upset as he made his way off the field, with his side having not long taken the lead through Adam Armstrong.

Commentating for Sky Sports, Don Goodman said: "You can see how heartbroken he is, David Brooks. It's heart-breaking. The biggest occasion.

"He just wanted to be a part of it. The best thing his team-mates can do now, to take away some of the pain, is to go on and win this game."

It's a sight that will come as a concern for Wales boss Rob Page, who's set to name his squad next week for a double-header of friendlies this summer.

Wales first take on Gibraltar in the Algarve on June 6, before travelling to Trnava to take on Slovakia on the Sunday.
