A project team is looking for people to help bring the story of Cumbernauld New Town to life.

A Town for Tomorrow – Revealing the Records of the Cumbernauld Development Corporation delves into the story of the town from its historical archives.

Those behind it would like to hear from people with a keen interest in history to help catalogue the work of the Cumbernauld Development Corporation (CDC).

Thanks to a £34,000 grant from Archives Revealed, the project has employed a dedicated archivist to catalogue an extensive collection of documents.

This includes minutes, reports, photographs, and architectural drawings that detail the creation and administration of Cumbernauld New Town.

Volunteers helping to collect and catalogue the work will be able to enjoy exploring the town's history as well as meet new people with a shared interest in the work.

You will be based at the North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre in Motherwell and will have the opportunity to work on a number of tasks involving the archives.

Heather Liddle, active and creative communities manager at North Lanarkshire Council, said: “Cataloguing and preserving this collection will provide valuable insights into the work of the Cumbernauld Development Corporation.

“This project will make the cultural, architectural, environmental, educational, and social aspects of Cumbernauld New Town accessible to a wide audience.”

Project archivist Carly Davidson added: “Joining our project will allow volunteers to learn new skills, be part of their community, meet new people, and help educate and inspire others. We offer flexible roles and commitment levels, with full training and support provided.

“Volunteers will be based at North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre in Motherwell, working on tasks such as improving record descriptions, adding context, digitising records, and basic preservation.”

The archive team will be at Cumbernauld Gala Day on Saturday, June 29 to promote the project and engage with locals about the New Town's history and volunteer opportunities.
