These are some of the things you can and can't do in a polling station

Millions of Britons will head to the polls today to elect a new Prime Minister and government – and nearly all of us are familiar with the process of what happens inside a polling station.

We’ll go in, give our name and address and then we’re then given a ballot paper before heading off to a booth to mark our vote with a pencil.

But not everyone knows the extensive list of what you can and can’t do – so we’re hoping that this list might help you.

Technically yes, it’s not illegal. However, the Electoral Commission strongly discourages it – and you may risk breaking the law by inadvertently revealing how someone else has voted. Likewise, you risk accidentally taking a photo of a ballot paper’s unique identification number.

Can I tweet?

The Electoral Commission advises against this – even if it’s your vote. However, you’re perfectly within your limits to tweet outside of the polling station.

Still be careful though, Section 66 of the Representation of the People Act says that it is a crime to communicate information about the way someone has voted – or to influence someone to display their ballot once they have voted.

Unfortunately not, so it’s probably best to leave that Jez We Can t-shirt at home. The Electoral Commission advises that it may be intimidating for other voters.

Yes, essentially. Polling station staff can’t refuse your right to vote if you’re drunk or under the influence of drugs. If you’re disruptive though, you will be asked to return once you have sobered up.

Yes! It just has to be on your headphones and not too loud. Also, make sure you remove them when you’re initially registering. Otherwise, rock on.

Of course, providing that you’ve haven’t already posted your ballot paper in the box. Return to the front desk and explain your mistake to staff – they’ll let you cancel your ballot and issue you with a new paper.
