Kent is in for a week of hot weather and sunshine as the county is set to experience official heatwave conditions. Forecasts from the Met Office predict the mercury rising to the mid to high 20s this afternoon (Monday, June 24) and across the coming days.

These forecasts indicate that Tuesday, June 25 will be the hottest day of the week, with the Met Office stating that temperatures could rise to peaks of 29C in the South East and London. While Kent might not see temperatures quite as hot as that, it is still going to be very warm across the county on this day, with peaks of up to 27C.

As the spell of summery weather approaches, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a yellow heat health alert for the majority of the nation, including the south east, which came into effect at 8am this morning. The UKHSA has warned that “there is potential for significant impacts to be observed across the health and social care sector due to the high temperatures” here in the south east.

The Met Office defines a heatwave as when a location records a period for at least three consecutive days with daily maximum temperatures meeting or exceeding the heatwave temperature threshold. The threshold varies by UK county, ranging between 25C and 28C in areas in England and Wales.

Temperatures are expected to peak at around 4pm on Tuesday, with highs of 27C and 26C toward the north and west of the county, including Dartford, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells. This hot spell will continue into Wednesday and Thursday, when temperatures will again rise to highs of 26C to 27C in Kent.

There is a chance for some rain on Thursday evening, bringing cooler air for Friday, followed by more changeable conditions over the weekend. The Met Office’s long range forecast for Friday, June 28 to Sunday, July 7 adds: “Fresher conditions with a westerly wind from the Atlantic, and changeable weather is most likely to prevail through much of this period; the hotter and more humid weather experienced by the south prior to this will most likely have been pushed away into the nearby Continent.

“However, there remains at first, a small risk that these conditions could linger for a time in the south, with the change to fresher weather more erratic with a chance of more widespread thunderstorms.” Below, KentLive has put together hour-by-hour forecasts for Tuesday, June 25 for several key Kent areas, including Rochester, Tunbridge Wells and Canterbury using data from the Met Office and BBC Weather.
