Huge Waves Crash Into US Military Base in Marshall Islands

Dramatic footage has captured huge waves crashing into a United States military building in the Marshall Islands on Saturday, January 20.

US Army Garrison Kwajalein Atoll (USAG-KA) confirmed a significant flooding event on Roi-Namur in the Marshall Islands on Saturday night and said they were planning to relocate all Roi residents until services were restored.

Video from @worldmaverick shows the moment a huge wave breaks down a door, washing over people inside the building.

He told Storyful he was enjoying a night at the Outrigger Bar & Grill when “rouge waves” crashed through the building.

“I saw my friends disappear right in front of my eyes. More waves kept coming. Everyone responded to the emergency scenario and thankfully no one was seriously hurt,” he said.

USAG-KA personnel evacuated 80 people, while 60 others stayed to assess the damage and restore basic services.

Flooding caused moderate to severe damage to several locations include a dining facility, Outrigger Bar and Grill, chapel and Tradewinds Theater, the army confirmed in a statement. Credit: @worldmaverick via Storyful
