Police have revealed an image of the suspected Second World War shell which led to the closure of a main road in Warwickshire. It was found in a field close to a home on the A45 London Road yesterday afternoon, July 2.

Police threw a 100m cordon around the area, with several neighbouring properties evacuated. They closed the stretch of main road for almost three hours.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists were called to the scene. They confirmed it was not an explosive device. But they did detonate the device as a precaution.

Warwickshire Police shared the image of the device before it was destroyed in a post on Facebook. In the post, the force thanked people for their patience following the road closure.

It read: "This was the item that led to the closure of the A45 near Stretton-on-Dunsmore yesterday. It was initially believed to be a Second World War mortar shell so as a precaution we put in a cordon around it.

"Explosives experts attended and established it wasn’t an explosive, so the cordon was lifted. Thank you for your patience while we dealt with this incident, hopefully you will appreciate we can’t take any chances with incidents such as this."
