A travel warning has been issued for holidaymakers in Italy due to a series of active volcanoes.

According to the Foreign Office, emergency plans have been updated with Vesuvius as well as the Phlegraean fields among them. They warn that these areas remain active and have experienced tremors this year.

In an update on May 21, the Foreign Office warns of a number of active volcanoes. In the event of a volcanic eruption, people are being warned to follow the instructions of the local authorities.

The Foreign Office update on the safety and security page reads: "There are several active volcanoes in southern Italy. National emergency planning has been updated for Vesuvius as well as the Phlegraean fields, an area that remains active and which has experienced tremors in 2024."

The Foreign Office is directing tourists to the Civil Protection Department website here, where advice has been given out on what you should under certain circumstances.

On their website, which the travel experts urge people to read, they state: "Italy, together with Iceland, has the greatest concentration of active volcanoes in Europe and is one of the first in the world for the number of inhabitants exposed to volcanic risk. Active or potentially active volcanoes are situated in southern Italy with varying degrees of hazard.

"Those who live or are in the volcanic zone must be informed about their local authority’s emergency plan, to be able to follow the Civil Protection authorities’ instructions on what to do in cases of eruptions and any eventual evacuation operations, if required."
