Coronation Street viewers were left stunned as beloved character Alya Nazir made an unexpected exit from the show after a decade.

In Wednesday's episode, fans saw Alya leave the famous cobbles for a new job opportunity in Ireland, stepping down from Adam's law firm to join one of his competitors.

This decision sparked a heated argument between the two, with Adam feeling betrayed, but it was clear that he had pushed Alya too far.

Actress Sair Khan, who portrays Alya, is taking a maternity break from the popular ITV soap to welcome her first child. It was confirmed in Wednesday's episode that she would be leaving Weatherfield for Dublin in a fresh start in her career.

However, Alya didn't leave without some unresolved issues - her relationship with Adam Barlow seemed to be growing stronger. Yasmeen was suspicious about their feelings for each other and questioned whether Alya would miss him.

In her final scenes, Adam gave her a pricey law book and wished her well in Dublin, but it was evident that they were both hiding their true emotions about being separated.

Coronation Street's Sair Khan will be taking a break from filming as she prepares to welcome her baby. She announced the news earlier this year: "Hello... It's been a little while since posting on here which has been a real mix of emotions.

"With all that is happening in the world it didn't feel like the right time to share but we also know it's okay to keep hope and pray for peace whilst acknowledging that we feel blessed and grateful."

She added: "Last year was a challenging time for us both with Nathan's chondroblastoma surgery on his pelvis. It's been a long road to recovery and still has many obstacles ahead as we deal with the spread of the tumour to his lungs.

"Life can be difficult and there'll always be challenges to face but there are also important lessons to be learnt and gifts to be cherished. We're so excited for the arrival of Baby Chilton in Spring 2024."

Coronation Street is shown on ITV1 at 8pm every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
