James Gunn apologises for Guardians of the Galaxy 'mistake'

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has apologised to fans for leaving out a certain detail about Drax the Destroyer from his film trilogy.

In the Marvel comics, Drax is a skilled saxophonist who often entertains the other team members with his musical talents. He even defeats an army of aliens with his saxophone playing in Infinity Countdown #3, where he amplifies his music with the Power Stone.

Today (May 17), one fan took to Twitter to share their disappointment about this omission from the films.

"I loved the trilogy but I’m sad we never got Super Sax Drax? I feel like @DaveBautista could have really given us some great Kenny G vibes!" they wrote.

Gunn then hit back with a jokey response on the social media site.

"I know. @DaveBautista has been taking sax lessons for ten years all to no avail," he quipped. "Maybe he can star in the Stan Getz biopic. Sorry, Dave!"

Last year, Gunn explained why he chose to make Dave Bautista's Drax an alien, given he's a human whose spirit was placed in a superhuman body in the comics.

"I didn’t want to make a space opera with a dozen earthlings who just coincidentally found themselves in space," he shared on Twitter.

"How could I even explain that in the 1st 20 minutes of a movie? I wanted a group of aliens and orphans from different planets who banded together."

Meanwhile, Marvel boss Kevin Feige recently called Bautista "one of the best actors" in the MCU for his portrayal of Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.

"Not only is Drax one of the best characters in the MCU, written by James, but I think Dave Bautista has become one of the best actors that we've ever gotten to work with," he said.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is out now is cinemas. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 and Vol 2 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are streaming on Disney+.
