France have confirmed that Kylian Mbappe suffered a broken nose during the country's win over Austria.

Monday night saw France claim a 1-0 win against Austria in their Euro 2024 opener in Germany. Max Wober scored an own goal in the first half which ultimately decided the contest.

It was during the second half that Mbappe had an inadvertent clash of heads with Austria defender Kevin Danso. The centre-back has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer.

United are looking to strengthen the centre-back position, with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite a known target. Danso has also emerged as a potential candidate to be signed by the Reds, but for the time being he is featuring for Austria at Euro 2024.

After the clash of heads, Mbappe required treatment on the pitch for what appeared to be a nose injury. Man United icon Roy Keane was less than impressed with what the former Paris Saint-Germain ace did after the clash, with Mbappe going back on the pitch before sitting down.

"He gets an injury he's gone back on the pitch when he's trying to stop the play," Keane said on ITV's coverage of the match. "He gone to sit on the pitch and I don't like to see this.

"This is out of order, whether he's been instructed by the manager to go back on. He's had treatment he's come off... to go back on and sit on the pitch, he deserved to get a yellow card and I don't like to see it."

Now the France Football Federation (FFF) have confirmed that Mbappe did suffer a broken nose, but also stated that the forward would wear a protective mask and not undergo surgery.

"Kylian Mbappe returns to the base camp of the French national team," the statement from the FFF read. "Kylian Mbappe suffered a broken nose during the second part of the Austria-France held this Monday in Dusseldorf.

"The captain of France was treated first by the medical staff and Dr. Franck Le Gall, who diagnosed him with a nose fracture.

"Mbappe will receive treatment in the next few days, but he will not undergo surgery in the immediate future.

"A mask will be made for him so that the number 10 of the French national team can prepare for his return to the competition after a period dedicated to treatment."
