Leigh Leopards to beat NRL clubs to David Armstrong after contract backflip

Leigh Leopards could be set to beat Newcastle Knights and Sydney Roosters to the signing of David Armstrong. The speedy fullback has been a long-term target for Adrian Lam and despite NRL interest, reports claim Leigh could secure his services.

It has been reported in recent weeks that Armstrong was set to sign a new contract at Newcastle, where he has made his NRL breakthrough this year. That was despite the fact the Roosters came calling and were keen to sign him themselves.

But now, the Daily Telegraph is reporting that Armstrong is set to sensationally backflip on that agreement after telling the club he wants to take up the contract on the table from the Super League club.

While Armstrong is wanted at Newcastle, he will ultimately remain at the club as a backup to Kalyn Ponga, while Leigh have assured him that he would be a key performer in his side. That is also believed to have been reflected accordingly in the offers made by both clubs, with the Leopards offering more money.

It would be quite the acquisition for Leigh, with Armstrong providing the speed and qualities that have helped the likes of Bevan French and Jai Field be a big success in the competition.

The Leopards are set for a big recruitment cycle. A number of players are moving on, which is set to free up significant salary cap space, and quota spots. Armstrong now looks set to be a part of that.
