Breaking down the ending of Red Eye ITV

Since Red Eye dropped on ITV a few weeks ago, our Sunday evenings have been spent as sofa detectives, trying to figure out who is framing Dr Nolan (Richard Armitage) and why.

A new episode of the six-part mini-series drops every Sunday, with the final episode set to air on 26th May. However, ITV has done us all a massive favour and put all six episodes on ITVX already. So if like us, you couldn't possibly wait six whole weeks to find out what happens to Dr Nolan and Hana, then you're in luck.

And if like us, you spent your whole bank holiday binge watching the series, and still have a few questions to clear up about the ending then here's everything you need to know about the ending of ITV's Red Eye.

What was Dr Nolan given in Beijing?

Throughout the series, many characters believed Dr Nolan had been given something in China that he was choosing to hide.

At the beginning of episode five Nolan has a brain wave and reflects back on his time with Shen Zhao, and comes to the realisation that it was she who stabbed him, not the bouncers.

He and Hana head back in the plane, where he instructs her to dig into his stabbing wound, where she finds a nano SIM card.

What was on the SIM card?

Shen Zhao's goal with placing the SIM card in Dr Nolan, wasn't to betray China, but in fact to defend it. She was working with Sir George, the British spy who was posing as the head of the medical company Nolan was working for.

Her job was to place the SIM card within one of Sir George's doctors at the conference, without their knowledge as part of Operation Broadside.

On the SIM card was two versions of the same computer code. One was written by an MIT graduate, and the other was a copy that had been doctored by the CIA, in order to make it appear like China was planning to take over a UK based nuclear facility and cause mass destruction.

The CIA, headed up by Mike, planted the code in order to hopefully break a deal between China and the UK. The two countries were planning to make a deal in which China would be allowed to build nuclear reactors on UK soil, which the CIA didn't want happening, and so they tried to break the trust between the two countries.

Who was responsible for Shen Zhao and Sir George's murders?

Episode six begins by taking us back to the night of Shen Zhao's death, where we see Mike and his two cronies (including the assassin who killed Sir George) watching Shen Zhao and Dr Nolan in the club.

They followed the pair to the club, and after Nolan left they interrogated Shen. However when she refused to give up the information, Mike gave the order for her death, and his assassin killed her. They paid off the local police and placed Shen's body in Nolan's car. As Shen was the daughter of someone high up in the Chinese government, Nolan would be extradited back to China, and give Mike a chance to get to him first and obtain the SIM.

Who was responsible for the murders on the plane?

Over the course of one very dramatic plane journey, all of Dr Nolan's fellow doctors, a dog and a vegan passenger were all killed.

Their deaths were down to Mike (this guy has a lot of blood on his hands) who had hired two ex-military men to go on the plane and find the file Shen Zhao had given Nolan. One of the men was hidden in the hold and snuck onto the main section of the plane by unscrewing the panel in the staff area. The other posed as the air marshal and at some points genuinely seemed like he was on Hana and Nolan's side.

They tortured the doctors for information about the SIM, before killing them when they knew nothing. The vegan passenger and the doctor were unfortunate casualties after they both ate Dr Nolan's poisoned meal.

Mike also arranged for Chris (the doctor who didn't go on the plane) to be kidnapped from Heathrow and killed.

How was Mike caught?

After getting taken off the case Maddie takes things into her own hands, and intercepts MI6 by picking up Nolan and Hana from the plane, with Jess by her side.

They head to the US embassy, where Maddie thinks they'll all be safe with Mike. After a quick snog in their office, Mike accidentally reveals his link to the case after he mentions the SIM to Maddie. She then puts it all together, and realises she's been played.

In the other room Nolan also works this out, and stops Hana and Jess from drinking the drugged coffee. They stage an attack on Mike's colleagues, and along with Maddie they try to escape.

They're intercepted by Mike, who threatens to shoot them, however Jess saves the day when she takes out a SIM card and throws it to the ground so they can all escape. The four drive off and begin uploading the files to MI5, where they discover Mike's plot against the Chinese.

Mike realises he's been played when the sniper shows Jess tricked them with a Vodafone SIM card.

Mike hunts the group down in a peaceful garden and threatens to kill Nolan and Hana, he tries to shoot Hana, but Nolan dives in front, saving her. And it turns out that peaceful garden they were on was actually the grounds of the Chinese embassy, and so Mike is then arrested.

How does the series end?

Ok, we got a lot of wrapping up in the last 10 minutes. While at the hospital, Nolan is making a recovery from the gun wound and tries to ask Hana out, but she's fallen asleep. Looks her dad's dream of her marrying a doctor might come true.

Maddie gives Jess the exclusive story about Operation Broadside which ends up on the front page of the London Echo, presumably jump staring Jess's journalism career.

Maddie heads home, where it's revealed her husband knew about her relationship with Mike.

And finally, after grappling with the death of her mother throughout the series, during a family dinner Hana reveals Maddie gave her her mother's file from her time in police custody in Hong Kong, and she gives it to her father. While he is initially reluctant, he eventually opens the file, and weeps over the death of his first wife.

It ends on a positive note though with Hana's dad promising to talk more about Hana's mum.
