A lifeboat was called out after a fishing vessel got into difficulty in Northumberland. Newbiggin RNLI received a call from Humber Coastguard at around 1.30pm on Saturday following a distress call from a 10m fishing boat near Cresswell.

Volunteers quickly launched their Atlantic B class lifeboat 'Richard Wake Burdon' from the beach and headed north to the location, known as Snab Point.

The boat, which had two crew members, was found to have a fouled propeller which prevented them from returning to Amble.

A tow was secured to the vessel and it was taken to the seaside town. Preparations were then put in motion to clear the debris from the propeller.

The boat was passed into the care of the Newbiggin coastguard and the lifeboat returned to the station.

The RNLI charity's lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 142,700 lives since it was founded in 1824.

Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts.

They operate 238 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and more than 240 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK and Channel Islands.
