Lily Allen resented Elton John for years for ignoring a letter she never sent

"I was quite cross with him for a few years," said Allen.

Sorry seems to be the hardest word...

That may be, but Lily Allen is finally admitting she owes Elton John an apology for holding a grudge against him over his lack of response to a letter that she later realized she never sent.

Allen recounted the story on the BBC podcast "Miss Me?" she cohosts with Miquita Oliver.

"I used to be managed by Elton John," she explained. "He would call me like once every couple of weeks to check in and say hi and make sure I was okay. And there was some times in that period where I wasn't okay."

"We parted ways, and I wrote this long letter to say how sad I was about the situation and that there was a big Elton-shaped hole in my life," she continued. "Over the next few years as my life began to sort of spiral out of control, I held much resentment for the fact that I'd made myself very vulnerable in this letter and told him all about my sobriety, and I was quite cross with him for a few years."

To clarify, Oliver asked if Allen's resentment stemmed from John's lack of response, which the singer and actress confirmed.

"I thought it was mean of him, and then when I moved here to America, I was unpacking and I found the letter," she admitted. "I never sent it! Elton, if you're listening — which you're probably not — I love you and I no longer harbor that resentment towards you."

Perhaps this explains some of Allen's more bizarre behavior when it comes to John. In 2008, the two hosted the GQ Men of the Year Awards in London, during which Allen was visibly drunk on stage. When John suggested that Allen should lay off the champagne, she replied, “F--- off, Elton. I’m 40 years younger than you. I have my whole life ahead of me.”

He wittily retorted, "I could still snort you under the table."

But things got even weirder when, in 2009, Allen's music video for "Who'd Have Known" featured her abducting John (played by a lookalike), tying him up in her living room, and forcing him to confess his love for her.

Allen, who now largely focuses on small acting roles and raising her children, burst onto the pop scene in 2006 with her debut single "Smile," from her album Alright, Still, which was nominated for a Grammy and several awards at the BRIT Awards. She released three more albums — 2008's It's Not Me, It's You, 2014's Sheezus, and 2018's No Shame — but has largely taken a step back from music.
