The southernmost seat in the city is Liverpool Garston and the newest in the area.

Reinstated this year, previous iterations of the constituency have been held by Labour but as late as 1983 was the last area in Liverpool to have a Conservative MP, with Malcolm Thornton in post. It has been returned to its original name of Liverpool Garston having previously included Halewood for the past 14 years.

That is now part of the new Widnes and Halewood seat under the Boundary Commission changes instigated last year.

Maria Eagle has retained the seat for Labour since 1997 and has served in a number of ministerial positions in the Blair and Brown governments.

It is almost being contested by the most candidates of any Liverpool constituency.
