London Covid cases by borough: One in 50 test positive with capital’s rate double the UK average

Nearly half of London’s boroughs reported Covid case rates of more than one in 50 in the run-up to Christmas, an Evening Standard analysis of the latest weekly data reveals.

In the week to December 22, 14 London boroughs reported case rates of at least 2,000 per 100,000 of population - equivalent to at least one in 50 people testing positive.

The top five boroughs for new cases were south of the river, with Lambeth recording 9,701 cases in that week alone, an increase of 41 per cent on the previous week.

Croydon saw the highest percentage increase of any London borough over the seven-day period, with a 79.2 per cent rise in cases.

However, this is dwarfed by the percentage increases recorded in the previous week to December 17, when cases jumped by as much as 261 per cent in Lambeth - suggesting the speed at which the Omicron-driven wave in cases is sweeping London has been slowing.

Wandsworth, Southwark, Croydon and Lewisham all recorded new cases of more than 7,700 in the latest seven-day period alone.

The London borough with the fewest number of new cases was Kensington and Chelsea, which recorded less than a third of hardest-hit Lambeth’s cases at 3,044.

Across the capital as a whole, some 181,529 cases were reported in the seven days up to December 22. That translates to a case rate of 2016.4 - meaning one in 50 people in London tested positive in a week.

The capital’s case rate was 58 per cent higher than the previous seven days. The latest figures also reveal it was nearly twice the UK average of 1,095.2.

In the days after December 22, when more than 28,000 cases were reported in London, daily cases in the capital have fallen steadily with 4,420 reported on Boxing Day.

Experts have said that data collection would be affected by the festive period.

The latest figures come after Health Secretary Sajid Javid pledged on Monday that there would be no new restrictions in England for New Year’s Eve.

London, which is the epicentre of the wave of the Omicron variant cases, reported 364 Covid-19 hospital admissions on Christmas Day, up 73 per cent week-on-week but below the 390 admissions reported on December 23.

NHS figures reveal England has the highest number of Covid-19 patients in hospital since March, at 8,474 as of 8am on Monday.

However, chief executive of NHS Providers, Chris Hopson, warned on Tuesday against over-interpreting the hospitalisation data, saying many were treated for another illness but also testing positive.

He told BBC Breakfast: “In the previous peaks, we’ve had some very seriously ill older people who’ve got really significant respiratory problems and... they had to go into critical care.

“The difference this time is we’ve got quite a few patients who are coming in - they might have fallen off their bike and knocked their head or broken their leg - and what’s happening is they’ve got no symptoms but when they arrive, they’re actually testing positive for Covid.”
