Major UK banks hit by payment issues as people's 'bills bounce'

Thousands of Barclays, HSBC, Nationwide and Virgin Money customers have been hit by payment problems with some saying their bills have "bounced".

The banking giants have been affected by issues with a system that operates payments between individuals and firms, according to the BBC.

Many customers have taken to social media to complain, as one X user said: "Why can't anyone send me money? It keeps declining". A Barclays staff member replied: "There is an issue with Faster Payments (not Barclays thankfully) and it's affecting a number of banks so payments can't be made to and from them."

The social media post added that Barclays is "working hard to get things sorted".

HSBC said at 12.22pm on Friday: "Customers can now log into personal Online & Mobile Banking. We're working hard to resolve secondary issues, including view recent transactions. We're sorry and will continue to share updates.

"Customers sending payments may see a slow response or see a failure notice. Please check with the recipient or view your recent transactions in the mobile app via the notifications bell icon in the top right corner before attempting to the send the payment again."

One Nationwide customer said on X: "When are payments expected? My bills are bouncing and I can’t pay for a train ticket I need in the next hour".

Nationwide told the BBC it was aware of "third-party payments issues impacting some providers, including Nationwide" which had "delayed a small number of payments".

"This has unfortunately delayed a small number of payments, which we expect will be processed and paid later today. The overwhelming majority of payments were processed as normal. All other services are working as normal."

Virgin Money has also been impacted, and said at 12.52pm: "Access to our mobile banking app has been fully restored and new payments continue to flow normally. Like other banks, we’re working hard to process the backlog of payments delayed as quickly as possible, and will update you as soon as we can."
