Man arrested after four cars damaged in late-night Great Wakering crash

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after four cars were severely damaged in a late-night smash.

Shocked residents in Great Wakering High Street were woken by a “loud bang” just before midnight on Sunday after a car veered into a series of parked cars.

One resident, Rachael Louise Squires has revealed her car has already been scrapped after it was pushed onto the pavement and slammed into the car in front.

Police have confirmed a man was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and taken to hospital.

Rachael said: “We heard two crashes, and most of the people in the area woke up and came out, as it was so loud.

“There were five damaged cars including the one the man was driving.

“I didn’t realise it was my car damaged at first, until I realised it was on the pavement.

“I was shocked, but now also angry and upset.

“My car was taken straight to the scrapyard at around 3am, along with another car. I had to get it recovered straight away as it had been pushed onto the pavement and crushed the car in front.”

Essex Police have urged any witnesses to come forward with information.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “A man has been arrested following a collision in Great Wakering High Street.

“We were called to reports a silver BMW had been in collision with a number of other vehicles shortly before 11.55pm on Sunday 30 June.

“A man has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and has been taken to hospital.

“If you have any information, CCTV, dash cam or other footage in relation to this incident, then please get in contact with us.

“Please quote incident 1496 of 30 June.”

A spokesman for Essex Fire added: “Firefighters from Shoebury were called to High Street, Great Wakering at 12.05am on 1 July.

“On arrival they confirmed that it was a collision between four vehicles. Crews made the scene safe by 12.52am and left the incident with the police.
