Man arrested on suspicion of 'drink and drug driving' after 'horrific' crash

A man was arrested on suspicion of 'drink and drug driving' after a 'horrific' crash in Bolton.

Police, paramedics and fire crews raced to the scene of the two-car smash on Bradshaw Road at around 4.30pm yesterday (Sunday). Emergency services cordoned off the area at the junction of Bury Road, Bradshaw Road, Ramsbottom Road and Tottington Road, beside the Walves Reservoir.

In an update issued today (Monday), a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said two people were rushed to hospital from their scene. Their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

A man - aged in his 20s - was arrested on suspicion of drink and driving. He was also arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He remains in custody to be quizzed by detectives. The fire service confirmed yesterday that one of the people had to be cut free from a car after the crash.

A post shared to a local Edgeworth Facebook group, warning locals of the road closures, said: "Horrific accident at the intersection towards Edgworth. The route has been closed in four directions."

In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: "At around 4.30pm yesterday afternoon (Sunday 19 May 2024), we were called to reports of a road traffic collision between two vehicles on Bradshaw Road, Bolton. Occupants of both vehicles were taken to hospital with injuries that were described as not life-changing or life-threatening.

"A man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of drink and drug driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He remains in police custody for questioning."

Yesterday, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "At around 4.20pm today (Sunday 19 May), fire crews were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Bradshaw Road, Bolton. Two fire engines from Bolton Central and Bolton North quickly attended the incident which involved two vehicles.

"Two casualties self extricated prior to arrival and crews used specialist equipment to extricate one other. Crews worked with colleagues from North West Ambulance Service to assess casualties and make the area safe.

"Firefighters were in attendance for approximately one hour and fifteen minutes."
