Two dead and teenager missing after swimming in hot weather

A man and a teenager have died in separate incidents after they went swimming in the hot weather.

Police are also still searching for a teenager who went missing in Clacton, Essex after getting into difficulty in the sea.

The emergency services searching for a 17-year-old boy in a quarry lake in Bishops Itchington, Warwickshire said on Friday they had recovered a body.

Inspector Rupert Atkinson said the body was found at around 10.50am. He said: "We are sad to report police searching the Blue Lagoon quarry area of Bishop's Itchington have recovered a body."

Although there has been no formal identification, next of kin have been informed, he said.

In another incident on Thursday, Thames Valley Police said they responded to reports of a man in the Jubilee River in Slough and a body was recovered, with the man pronounced dead at the scene.

The death is not being treated as suspicious and the man's next of kin have been informed.

In Clacton, the coastguard was called at 6.20pm on Thursday to reports two boys were in difficulty near the pier.

One boy was rescued by a lifeboat crew and has been given the all-clear by medics, but the other teenager has not been found.

Przemek Jakiela, who works in the amusement arcade on the pier, said he threw a lifebelt to one of the youngsters, but was unable to reach him because of strong wind and currents.

He threw the lifebelt a number of times before the teenager was finally able to grab hold of it and Mr Jakiela, along with pier bar worker Amy Bayliss, kept a firm grip on the rope until an RNLI crew managed to pull the boy from the water.

On trying to rescue the other boy, Mr Jakiela said: "As I got there I just saw his head go under and he disappeared and did not come back up again. There was just nothing we could do for him."

The Local Government Association, which represents 370 councils in England and Wales, issued water safety advice this week after several people drowned while swimming during the hot spell.
