Man taken to hospital with serious injuries after falling from Herne Bay bridge

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was seriously injured after falling from a bridge in Herne Bay this morning (Friday, June 14). Police and paramedics attended the scene on the A2990 Old Thanet Way shortly before 6am.

A spokesperson for Kent Police confirmed that the officers were responding to a report of concern for the welfare of a person in the area. The road was subsequently shut in both directions between Greenhill Bridge Road and the A299, Thanet Way.

Motorists faced heavy traffic and delays in the surrounding area while the road remained closed throughout the morning. An early update from traffic monitoring service Inrix stated: “A2990 Old Thanet Way in both directions closed due to police incident between B2205 Greenhill Bridge Road and A299 Thanet Way (Herne Bay Junction)."

A spokesperson for the police force has now said: "Kent Police was called at 5.52am on Friday 14 June 2024 following a report a man had fallen from a bridge over the A2990 Old Thanet Way. Emergency services attended and the man, who is in his 40s, has been taken to a London hospital where he remains in a serious condition."

A South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) added: “SECAmb were called shortly before 6am this morning (14/06/24) to reports of a person in need of medical attention on the A2990 in Herne Bay. Crews arrived and assessed and treated one person before taking them to Kings College Hospital in London for further care.”

Officers are investigating the fall and urge anyone who saw what happened or who has dashcam footage from the area between 5.30am and 5.52am to call 01843 222289 quoting reference 14-0127. The road was fully re-opened shortly before midday and normal traffic conditions resumed soon after.
