It's business as usual in the Premier League, as Manchester City responded to Arsenal's big win on Saturday with a thrashing of Wolves to remain in control of their own title destiny.

Three wins from their remaining three games will hand City the title, even if there are potentially tricky away games at Fulham and Tottenham in the space of four days. If City slip up, Arsenal could overtake them with two wins from their last two games, so the Blues will hope to get a favour from rivals Manchester United next Sunday when Arsenal visit Old Trafford.

While Pep Guardiola's side are in a position of strength, they know what will happen if they drop their standards, with the margins as fine as any of their previous title races under the manager. They only need to look at an incredible weekend of WSL action to see how quickly things can change.

Gareth Taylor's City Women have been excellent this season, and looked like they had finally found a way to break Chelsea's hold on the Women's Super League title. With Emma Hayes' Chelsea losing to Liverpool last week, City knew that four points from their final two games would crown them champions, but a home clash with Arsenal on Sunday was not a simple fixture.

It was all going well, with the Blues leading 1-0 as injury time loomed, but an 89th-minute equaliser from Stina Blackstenius set up a nervy ending, and the Swede's 94th-minute winner turned the title race on its head. Chelsea, six points behind with an extra game to play, were suddenly back in the running. Of course it had to be Arsenal, as well.

Chelsea were still seven goals behind City when it came to goal difference, so they not only had to win on Sunday, win their game in hand, and win on the final day, but also better City's goal difference in the space of those three games. They went out and beat Bristol City 8-0 to complete a nightmare day for City.

Chelsea now just need to win their final two games, while matching City's goal difference at Aston Villa - who they historically struggle against - to retain their title. City have gone from one hand on the trophy to relying on help from Tottenham and United, who Chelsea play this week.

So just like in the Premier League, City will be hoping for United to slow down their title rivals in the final week. If United beat Chelsea in the WSL and Arsenal in the Premier League, both at Old Trafford, they could face a situation where they hand the Blues two titles in a matter of days.

“All the staff and the fans know it. One mistake and you will not win the Premier League," said Pep Guardiola after the Wolves game. “The players know that if we don’t win, ciao ciao, bye-bye.

“You see the level of consistency with Arsenal but you smell they are not going to lose the two games they have. It’s going to be easy? No, but it’s in our hands.”

City Women have shown how easily that control can slip away in the space of five minutes, and the fact that it was Arsenal inflicting that blow will encourage the Gunners in the Premier League too. Guardiola's side should take note - and now everyone at City will be hoping for a double boost from United.
