Missing man's body discovered under blanket on roof of his own house

A man's body has been found on the roof of a house in Leeds, two days after he went missing from the same address.

Emergency services closed off the road in the Chapeltown area of the West Yorkshire city to recover the body from the top of the property.

The dead man is believed to be Gerard Colgan, aged 32, who lived at the house.

Footage showed an emergency worker emerge from a skylight to check the body after ambulances, firefighters and police officers attended the scene on Sunday afternoon.

It is believed Colgan had died before they arrived.

Firefighters were then seen using a ladder platform to recover the body.

A spokesman from West Yorkshire Police told Yahoo News UK: "The body of a man found on the roof of a house in Leeds yesterday is believed to a man reported missing from the address.

"Gerard Colgan, aged 32, was reported missing from the address in Harehills Avenue, Chapeltown, on Friday.

"At 2.40pm on Sunday, the body was located on the roof. While formal identification is yet to be completed, it is believed to be Mr Colgan and his family has been informed."

The spokesman said there were no suspicious circumstances and the Coroner’s Office had been notified.

It is unknown how Colgan died.

Images released on Monday show the body lying on the roof of the home, covered in a yellow blanket.

The alarm was raised at 3.30pm on Sunday, and Harehills Avenue was flooded with emergency vehicles soon after.

Neighbours discovered the reason behind the activity when pictures of the incident were shared on social media of the body on the roof.

Harehills Avenue and surrounding streets were all sealed off for several hours. Numerous roads in the Chapeltown area of the city were also closed.

Yorkshire Fire and Rescue and Yorkshire Ambulance Service have also been contacted for a statement.
