Marvel TV Series Will Soon Max Out at 2 Per Year, Says Disney CEO Bob Iger

The days of Marvel’s supersized TV superhero slate are over.

In a Tuesday-morning quarterly earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that the rollout of Marvel TV series will now aim to max out at two per year, with similar strictures being placed on movie output.

“We’re slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four,” Iger said on the call (per our sister site Variety), “and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two, or a maximum of three.”

When the Marvel Studios-produced TV series launched on Disney+ in January 2021 with WandaVision, that year wound up premiering no fewer than four other Marvel series: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki (Season 1), Hawkeye and, on the animated side, Season 1 of the What If…? anthology series.

Every year since, Disney+ has released at least three Marvel series: Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk and I Am Groot (Season 1) in 2022, plus Werewolf by Night and Guardians of the Galaxy standalone specials; Secret Invasion, Loki Season 2, What If…? Season 2 and I Am Groot Season 2 in 2023; and this year Echo, the animated X-Men ’97 and the WandaVision offshoot Agatha: Darkhold Diaries (currently penciled in for September).

On the un-dated horizon, meanwhile, you have Daredevil: Born Again (which reunites the Netflix series’ Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio, among others), the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever offshoot Ironheart, Wonder Man and a live-action Wakanda series, among other projects in various stages of development.

Iger said that some of the yet-to-be-released small-screen Marvel series represent “a vestige of basically a desire in the past to increase volume.”
