It wasn't an official afterparty, but the vibes were there

Following Monday night's Met Gala, stars hit the afterparty circuit — but it felt like the biggest (unofficial) bash was in the lobby of The Mark Hotel.

More than 60 stars stayed at the now-iconic Upper East Side spot this year, with many returning back to change outfits between the gala and the late-night parties.

In recent years, The Mark has become the place to be (and be seen) ahead of the Met Gala, thanks in part to its location just four blocks away from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

"The energy on the day is incredible. It goes crescendo starting with the positioning of the red carpet early in the morning, followed by the delivery of the flowers and the arrival of the glam squads," general manager Etienne Haro told PEOPLE. "As the day progresses, the intensity is palpable."

"The Met Gala’s reputation as 'fashion's biggest night' is certainly not an overstatement — and nor is ours, as 'the starriest hotel lobby in the world,' " Haro added.
