Met Office 'danger to life' warning as thunderstorms to hit UK

The Met Office has warned that thunderstorms could cause disruption to parts of the UK. Areas in Staffordshire will be affected, according to the forecaster.

A yellow weather warning is in place from 1pm until 9pm today (Monday, May 6). Stoke-on-Trent will be caught in the storm as well as northern parts of England.

Scotland will also have thunderstorms, it has been predicted, as well as parts of the south coast of England. According the the Met Office, most of the West Midlands will narrowly avoid the storm.

A spokesperson said of the yellow weather warning: "Thunderstorms and heavy downpours may cause flooding and travel disruption."

What to expect according to Met Office:

  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures

  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads

  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services

  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds

  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life
