Monaco Grand Prix LIVE!

Charles Leclerc has won his home race for the first time. The Ferrari star became the first Monegasque driver ever to triumph at Formula One’s most iconic event, finally converting an impressive pole position into a victorious Sunday on the familiar streets of the Principality after two previous high-profile failures.

Leclerc led the way all weekend in Monte Carlo, continuing his strong form on race day as he kept his composure to lead from wire to wire following a restart that followed a huge first-lap crash involving Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and the Haas cars of Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg.

The 26-year-old eased to a stylish win in an initially chaotic race that quickly gave way to a strategic battle centred around tyre management and strategy, cutting Max Verstappen’s title lead to 31 points in the process as the reigning world champion could only finish in sixth. Oscar Piastri held off Carlos Sainz to claim his first podium of the season for McLaren, with team-mate Lando Norris in fourth ahead of George Russell, Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Yuki Tsunoda, Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly, whose team-mate Esteban Ocon will serve a five-place grid penalty in Canada next month after causing an all-Alpine crash early on.

Monaco Grand Prix highlights

  • Leclerc wins strategic home race after dramatic start

  • Race restarts in original order after early chaos

  • Perez out after massive collision with Haas duo

  • Ocon handed five-place grid penalty for Gasly crash

  • Early red flag after huge first-lap accident

So that result cuts Verstappen’s title lead down to 31 points with 16 races still left on the expanded calendar in 2024.

The reigning world champion is still top on 169 points after coming sixth today, with closest challenger Leclerc now on 138.

Norris is third on 113, with Sainz fourth with 108 and Perez fifth on 107.

Piastri’s runners-up berth this afternoon sees him sixth on 71.

A final look at today’s race result.

First points of the season for both Albon and Gasly.

First podium of the season for Piastri too.

"Tonight is going to be a big night!" was the message from an emotional Leclerc over the team radio after such a momentous victory.

Ferrari’s celebrations continue on the podium, where Leclerc stands proudly during the national anthems before being handed his winner’s trophy by Albert II, Prince of Monaco.

A day he will never forget!

French football superstar Kylian Mbappe is waving the chequered flag down there.

Piastri holds off Sainz to finish second for McLaren, with team-mate Norris fourth and Russell fifth.

Verstappen finishes sixth, the same position he started the day in, with Hamilton seventh ahead of Tsunoda, Albon and Gasly.

CHARLES LECLERC FINALLY WINS HIS HOME MONACO GRAND PRIX!

The curse is over.

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 74

16:24 , George Flood

Second-place Piastri is coming under pressure from Sainz here in the last few laps.

Can he hold onto the runner-up spot?

Leclerc’s lead is up to nine seconds as he tells his engineer that he’ll take it home from here.

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 72

16:23 , George Flood

Into the last few laps now.

Zhou Guanyu has pitted for a late pair of softs.

16:17 , George Flood

A close-run thing there between Sargeant and Zhou Guanyu, who both grazed the barrier during a back-of-the-grid tussle.

Both men manage to keep their cars under control.

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 69

16:16 , George Flood

Leclerc’s lead is up to around three seconds now as the Ferrari starts to open up once again.

A first success at his home race surely now beckons for the Ferrari star, bar any last-gasp drama.

Verstappen has been complaining over team radio about no one watching his battery charge.

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 65

16:14 , George Flood

Music to Tsunoda’s ears as he’s told a change in RB strategy means he can start to push more.

“That’s what I like to hear” he says as he looks to move closer to Hamilton and put some distance between himself and Albon in ninth.

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 61

16:09 , George Flood

Nothing has really changed up at the front, with no one blinking as the laps tick away towards the end of the race.

Leclerc still leading by 1.766secs from Piastri.

There have been no changes in the points for a long time now and I don’t think there will be, bar any late drama, crashes or safety cars.

Doesn’t seem like anyone else will pit after Verstappen and Hamilton both did a little earlier.

The rapid Verstappen in sixth is the only one trying to upset the established order, applying the pressure on Russell.

But Hamilton is also gaining...

16:03 , George Flood

Bottas performed a lovely and rare Monaco overtake on Sargeant a couple of laps ago.

Now Stroll has performed a couple of his own on Zhou Guanyu and Sargeant to climb back up to 14th position following his puncture.

Verstappen has really picked up the pace since that pit and has just produced the fastest lap of the race and the fastest in the first sector on the next.

Russell starting to feel the heat in fifth...

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 53

15:58 , George Flood

Verstappen pits and goes back onto the hard tyres that he started the race with before switching to mediums during the early stoppage.

He comes out back in sixth and ahead of Hamilton, who isn’t happy about it.

He asks why he wasn’t told to push it on his out-lap and potentially gain a spot there.

Opportunity missed?

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 50

15:55 , George Flood

A nervy moment for Stroll as he clips the barrier and sustains a big puncture to his rear left tyre.

It spins off but doesn’t roll down or stay on the track, so no need for a safety car.

Stroll pits again to have another fitted.

He drops down to 16th and last place, a frustrating development after Alonso’s team driving had protected his 11th place around that first pit earlier on.

15:53 , George Flood

A funny moment between Leclerc and his engineer a little earlier as they tell him unequivocally that they are “not interested” in him voicing the margins of this race as things stand.

“That’s rude,” the race leader quips back.

Ferrari don’t want their rivals figuring out anything!

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 48

15:51 , George Flood

Leclerc’s lead over Piastri is back up over the one-and-a-half second mark.

The gap from Leclerc to Russell in fifth, the real story of the race given what it means for McLaren’s chances of potentially messing up Ferrari’s best-laid plans, is hovering at around 16 seconds as things stand.

15:47 , George Flood

Esteban Ocon has taken to social media to take full responsibility for that first-lap clash with team-mate Gasly that led to his early exit from the race.

It comes amid talk of a furious reaction from Alpine team boss Bruno Famin.

More on that to come I’m sure...

Gasly still occupying 10th spot as things stand with 42 laps left to go.

It would be his first points of the season.

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 43

15:43 , George Flood

Stroll does now pit for Aston Martin.

Alonso’s tactics paid off as his team-mate comes out ahead of him, straight back into 11th place.

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 42

15:42 , George Flood

So many drivers are being held up in this race.

Fernando Alonso is frustrating the four cars behind him in 12th as he tries to do team-mate Stroll a favour ahead of him.

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 39

15:40 , George Flood

Leclerc is not too happy at being asked to slow down even further.

“What is the scope for that?” asks the frustrated race leader.

New race engineer Bryan Bozzi tells him that it’s to deny McLaren a potential pitstop window, protecting Sainz who is sandwiched between Piastri and Norris.

Leclerc says he doesn’t like it.

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 37

15:37 , George Flood

It’s a five-place grid penalty for Ocon in Canada.

A hefty punishment for that first-lap collision with team-mate Gasly that saw Ocon exit the race early.

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 35

15:35 , George Flood

Just over a second the gap now between Leclerc and Piastri.

The gap between Leclerc and fifth-placed Russell at the start of that middle-tyre trio is now at around 20 seconds.

Feels like Ferrari and McLaren are trying to second-guess each other at the moment, wary of being caught out by any tactical shifts.

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 32

15:29 , George Flood

A momentary lapse of concentration from Norris there as he nearly clips the barrier.

But he avoids the collision and is still running in fourth.

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 30

15:27 , George Flood

At the moment this is a great race for lovers of tyre tactics and minutiae.

Norris is told over his radio that there are initial signs of wear to Sainz’s front left hard tyre.

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 28

15:24 , George Flood

We’re a little short on action at the moment, in truth.

All very comfortable for Leclerc at the moment.

The stewards have also indicated that there will be no action taken on that massive first-lap crash involving Perez, Magnussen and Hulkenberg.

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 24

15:20 , George Flood

Leclerc’s lead over Piastri is up to around 1.435secs as he opens up that Ferrari a touch more.

Sainz still third, ahead of Norris.

The medium-tyre trio of Russell, Verstappen and Hamilton follow.

Tsunoda in eighth and Albon in ninth are also running on hards.

 (REUTERS)
(REUTERS)

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 20

15:15 , George Flood

The pace is still rather slow (by F1 standards, anyway!) in this interesting tactical game centred around tyre management and avoiding potential undercuts.

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 18

15:13 , George Flood

An early pit stop for Bottas, who switches from medium tyres to the hard compound in that Sauber.

Apparently Sargeant swapped from hards to another set of hards on his Williams during the long delay, meaning he will need to stop at least once more in this race.

15:08 , George Flood

Good to hear that Sergio Perez is okay after such a heavy crash...

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 12

15:07 , George Flood

So Leclerc leads, 0.755secs ahead of Piastri.

Then comes Sainz, Norris, Russell, Verstappen, Hamilton, Tsunoda, Albon and Gasly.

Russell’s slow driving in fifth is causing some complaints from the cars behind him and he’s wondering why he can’t speed up.

Engineer Marcus Dudley tells him that there is nothing to be gained from speeding up at the moment.

Mercedes want him to manage those medium tyres all the way to the end.

All four cars ahead of him are now on the hard compounds.

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 14

15:05 , George Flood

Leclerc is also managing his tyres a lot at the front - this race is a tactical battle at the moment not being fought at full speed.

You wonder if the biggest drama has already passed...

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 9

15:00 , George Flood

Piastri is doing well to be running in second here.

Sky report that although McLaren were able to fix the sidepod during that delay, there was not enough time to fully repair the damage to his floor.

Race control have also confirmed that the eliminated Ocon’s 10-second time penalty will be converted into a grid penalty at the next race in Canada next month.

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 7

14:58 , George Flood

So Leclerc leads by about half a second as it stands.

A lot of cars managing their tyres at the moment.

Piastri is told the damage on his car is having an impact, but that the aero balance is good.

Ocon gets a 10-second time penalty for that collision with Gasly, but he’s already out of the race.

Monaco Grand Prix | Race restart

14:50 , George Flood

Back underway at last in sunny Monaco with the debris cleared and safety barrier fixed.

Leclerc gets away well again and leads from Piastri.

Not nearly as much drama this time, though a little contact involving the Aston Martin of Lance Stroll.

Monaco Grand Prix | Red flag

14:48 , George Flood

Ocon has just been pictured walking around in jeans, so obviously he’s not continuing either after that early collision with team-mate Gasly.

So we’re going to be four drivers down on the imminent restart.

The remaining cars are back out for another warm-up lap before the restart.

Looks like the top four have all changed tyres from mediums to hards during the delay.

Monaco Grand Prix | Red flag

14:46 , George Flood

No word from the stewards yet, but it’s worth noting that Magnussen has 10 penalty points on his license for the season.

12 would see him serve an automatic one-race ban.

He’s been speaking to Sky Sports and protesting his innocence, claiming Perez did not leave him enough space and that he was squeezed into the wall.

Hulkenberg has also bemoaned being caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Monaco Grand Prix | Red flag

14:43 , George Flood

Confirmation of the order of the restart from a standing start...

Monaco Grand Prix | Red flag

14:38 , George Flood

Word has come through that the race will restart in around 10 minutes’ time.

McLaren are working to fix the damage sustained by Piastri’s car during that initial skirmish with Sainz that caused the latter’s puncture.

Presumably some damage that may need looking at on the Alpines as well.

I imagine the recriminations are strong there too at the moment.

Gasly was absolutely seething with Ocon.

Monaco Grand Prix | Red flag

14:31 , George Flood

It’s now been confirmed that the restart from a standing start will feature the original race order.

Sainz breathes a sigh of relief.

He will restart back in third with that puncture fixed.

The stewards indicate there will be no action after his collision with Piastri that caused that early puncture.

Still waiting for their verdict on the huge smash involving Perez, Magnussen and Hulkenberg that has led to this long delay.

Monaco Grand Prix | Red flag

14:24 , George Flood

The damaged cars have been carried away and the debris cleared off track, but repair work continues on the barrier hit by Perez.

It will be interesting to see how this race restarts, even the teams don’t seem quite sure.

Did we get through enough of the first lap or will it be a full restart?

The damage to that Red Bull was horrendous.

Monaco Grand Prix | Red flag

14:23 , George Flood

This is a big clean-up operation at Monaco and the delay might continue for some time yet.

It looked like Perez was clipped by Magnussen on the narrow street circuit and spun into the wall, with Hulkenberg trying to pass on the left and also being caught.

A huge crash, that. Thankfully all the drivers are okay.

Monaco Grand Prix | Lap 1

14:23 , George Flood

All sorts of early drama in Monaco!

The red flags are out after a very ugly smash involving Perez and the Haas cars of Hulkenberg and Magnussen.

There is so much debris strewn all over the track.

This could be very good news for Sainz...

Monaco Grand Prix | Red flag

14:19 , George Flood

Magnussen could be in a spot of bother here once the stewards review that huge early crash.

Perez is obviously out of the race, as are both Haas drivers - what a disastrous afternoon for the team.

A double qualifying disqualification before both cars crash out on the first lap after starting from the pits.

Red Bull’s misery also continues...

Monaco Grand Prix | Red flag

14:19 , George Flood

Replays show there was also a first-lap clash there between the Alpines going into Turn 8, Portier.

Gasly was furious with Ocon for a very risky move that saw them collide and Ocon’s car raised into the air.

Talk about a dramatic start!

Lewis Hamilton confused over loss of pace in qualifying

13:49 , George Flood

Lewis Hamilton cut a rather frustrated figure after qualifying yesterday, having impressed during early practice for Mercedes before ending up seventh on the grid - two spots behind George Russell.

Hamilton, who is of course off to Ferrari in the summer, then said he did not expect to out-qualify his Silver Arrows team-mate for the rest of the 2024 season.

“It was looking great yesterday – we’ve really been working hard to improve this car, and from the get-go it felt great and we were obviously competitive yesterday and this morning,” Hamilton said.

“We’ve not [been] making any drastic changes or anything like that.

“The team worked really hard back at the factory to bring an upgrade in the last two races and also an upgrade this weekend, but we only had one, which George has.

“I anticipated it would be difficult to out-qualify George because he has the upgraded component, but it’s just great to see that we are bringing upgrades. But once we got to qualifying... I don’t understand.

“I already know automatically that I’m going to lose two-tenths going into qualifying, and that’s definitely frustrating and it’s something that I don’t really have an answer for at the moment.

“I’m not driving any different, the laps were really great, just lacking something.”

Pit lane opens

The green lights are on, the pit lane is open and the cars are making their way out of the garages in Monaco.

The race is now just over half an hour away as the excitement and atmosphere builds...

Horner: Red Bull weekend 'pretty much done' after qualifying nightmare

13:18 , George Flood

Are we finally seeing the emergence of a (whisper it very quietly) even slightly competitive F1 title battle in 2024?

After so much Max Verstappen dominance, the emergence of McLaren with Lando Norris’ maiden victory in Miami and then running the Dutchman close at Imola, coupled with Ferrari’s upturn in fortunes, has rather compounded a miserable week thus far for Red Bull and led to hope that it won’t be another complete procession as expected this season.

Sergio Perez will be helpless down in 16th today, while even a driver of Verstappen’s undoubted quality surely won’t be able to convert sixth into a race win or even podium at Monaco without some considerable drama lending a helping hand.

“It's been a struggle all weekend. The car hasn't suited the characteristics of this circuit,” Red Bull team principal Christian Horner admitted after qualifying on Saturday.

“Up until that last run [for Verstappen], anything between second and sixth was on but unfortunately we didn't get that last run in.

“The first sector was strong for us. It was mainly the tight hairpin, then Turn Five and Turn 10.

“The race is pretty much done barring safety cars. But we will come back fighting.

“Our race pace has been pretty good but whether we can demonstrate that, I'm not sure depending on how the traffic plays out."

Will it finally be Charles Leclerc’s day on home soil in Monaco at long last?

He’s looked spectacular all week so far, with, as pointed out by the BBC, the gap to second-place Oscar Piastri in qualifying actually greater than that between the Australian and Max Verstappen down in sixth.

But he knows all too well that even with Monaco’s famous lack of overtaking, pole position is not always a guarantee of victory on the streets of the Principality.

Dominant Leclerc takes Monaco pole again as Verstappen falters

12:55 , George Flood

Charles Leclerc will hope to make it third time lucky on home soil in Monaco today, having previously failed to convert valuable pole positions into wins at his home race in both 2021 and 2022.

Having led the way in the second and third practice sessions, the dominant Leclerc beat McLaren’s Oscar Piastri to pole by 0.154 seconds yesterday.

Carlos Sainz is third in the other Ferrari, followed by Piastri’s team-mate Lando Norris in fourth.

Reigning world champion Max Verstappen starts all the way down in sixth place at a track where overtaking opportunities are famously extremely few and far between, having collided with the wall at turn seven during his final qualifying lap.

He is sandwiched by the Mercedes’ of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, who line up fifth and seventh respectively.

Verstappen on Red Bull struggles: 'It's like driving a go-kart'

12:41 , George Flood

Red Bull have won four out of the last five races in Monaco, but it’s been a miserable week in the Principality so far for the reigning constructors’ champions.

After practice struggles, Max Verstappen ended up sixth in qualifying after hitting the wall at the first corner on his final qualifying lap and team-mate Sergio Perez made a shock exit from Q1 to line up 16th on the grid.

"I'm not disappointed with the position, I'm disappointed with our performance," Verstappen told Sky Sports after missing the chance to go one clear of the great Ayrton Senna with a ninth successive pole position.

"It's not come as a surprise to me because I knew our limitations coming into this weekend. It's been bad. I can't take any kerbs.

“In the middle sector, I'm driving around the kerbs. It feels like I'm driving a go-kart, with no suspension and no damping.

"It's been very difficult for us. I felt really comfortable in the high-speed corners, at least that was enjoyable but in the low-speed we are losing too much, where it's bumpy and the car is jumping around."

Leclerc confident of finally ending Monaco pole curse

12:18 , George Flood

Charles Leclerc will start today’s race sitting second in the F1 championship standings, 48 points behind leader and reigning world champion Max Verstappen.

That gap should be reduced this afternoon, though the Ferrari star will be taking nothing for granted given how his two previous pole positions have ended up at his home race.

In 2021, Leclerc was prevented from even starting the race due to a driveshaft issue and then 12 months later he could only claim P4 after some notable Ferrari tactical errors.

Last year, he wound up sixth after starting the race from third spot.

"It was nice. The feeling after a qualifying lap is very special here. Really happy about the lap. The excitement is so high. It feels really good,” Leclerc told Sky Sports after sealing his 24th career pole with a brilliant lap of 1:10.270 on Saturday.

"However, now I know more often than not in the past, that qualifying is not everything. As much as it helps, we need to put everything together for Sunday's race.

“In the past here we didn't manage to do so, but we are in a stronger position and we are a stronger team.

“I'm sure we can achieve great things and the win is the target."

Sainz keeps third spot but Haas duo disqualified from qualifying

12:01 , George Flood

Carlos Sainz has kept third spot on the grid this afternoon after being cleared by the stewards of allegedly impeding Williams’ Alex Albon during qualifying.

However, Haas duo Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen, who initially qualified in 12th and 15th place respectively, were both retrospectively disqualified from the session due to “irregularity with the opening of the drag reduction system (DRS) on the rear wings of their VF-24s”.

Both Haas drivers will begin today’s race from the pit lane as a result.
