N.C. Man Hit and Killed by Car While Biking 67 Miles for His 67th Birthday: ‘An Inspiration to All'

Members of the Matthews Run Club in North Carolina ran a collective 94.81 miles to honor Bruce Alan Davis, the bicyclist who was hit and killed on Sunday

A North Carolina man has died after he was hit by a car while riding 67 miles on his bicycle in honor of his 67th birthday.

Police responded to the 300 block of Matthews Township Parkway around 12:45 p.m. local time on Sunday after receiving a report about a collision “involving a motor vehicle and a bicyclist,” according to the Matthews Police Department.

The cyclist, Bruce Alan Davis, was treated at the scene by Matthews Fire & EMS before he was transported to the hospital “with life-threatening injuries.” However, Davis ultimately did not survive.

Davis, who was a member of the Matthews Run Club, “was cycling 67 miles to celebrate his 67th birthday” when the crash occurred, according to a post on the group’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

On Monday, members of the Run Club ran a collective 94.81 miles to honor their late friend, who was part of the club since it was established in 2018.

“Bruce was an active man by way of running, cycling and crossfitting,” the club wrote. “He was an inspiration to all around him. His smile was warm and welcoming and he is missed by many.”

Davis was known for his athletics and good sportsmanship, according to ABC affiliate WSOC-TV. His teammate John Carriker said Davis went on a cross-country bike ride last year.

“You would hear people talk about Bruce’s stride and how he just would lock down and keep that consistent stride, face forward up the hills,” said another friend, Deanna O’Connor.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, according to the MPD. No charges have been filed.
