NCIS star Michael Weatherly has provided fans with an exciting update about his upcoming spin-off series with Cote de Pablo.

It was announced earlier this year that the actors – who play couple Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David on the flagship series – will reunite for a 10-episode spin-off show set in Europe.

Weatherly has now offered a promising update on the status of production, telling TVLine that filming is set to kick off in Budapest later this year.

Weatherly also confirmed that the currently untitled series will see Tony and Ziva "trying to raise their tween daughter and save the world", adding: "What could go wrong!"

According to the show's offical synopsis, Tony, Ziva and their daughter Tali are forced to go on the run across Europe after Tony's security firm is attacked.

The couple must learn to trust each other again so they "can finally have their unconventional happily ever after", all while trying to figure who was responsible for the attack.

Weatherly and de Pablo will also executive produce the series alongside Laurie Lieser, Christina Strain and Shelley Meals, while John McNamara serves as the showrunner.

"We've been talking about this story for many years, and now with John McNamara at the helm, we are ready," the leading duo said of the show's announcement in February.

"The world of Tony and Ziva (and daughter Tali) promises to be an action-packed roller coaster fuelled by love, danger, tears and laughter."

McNamara added: "Given that the franchise is such a global sensation, I think it's phenomenal that CBS Studios and Paramount+ have given us the green light to shoot in Europe. As to the title of this series, if I told you what it is, I'd be violating the Espionage Act."

NCIS airs on CBS in the US. Seasons 1-20 are streaming on Disney+ in the UK.
