Newcastle open transfer window with bold move as £60m shoot out gets under way

Newcastle United have thrown their hat in the ring for Michael Olise on day one of the summer transfer window.

The Magpies are believed to have joined Chelsea and Bayern Munich by matching the £60million minimum asking price for the Crystal Palace winger's services. But know they face a challenge to lure him away from the capital.

It is also expected that Chelsea will be joined by Man City and potentially Liverpool in the hunt for the exciting 21-year-old. Nevertheless, the ambitious bid to sign the French Under-21 star is a signal of intent and a sign of what will be to come from Newcastle. Despite having to cut their cloth accordingly due to FFP and PSR, United do have money to spend too.

But they are open minded on possible outgoings which includes considering potential bids for Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron. Eddie Howe is keen to give the squad a freshen up and was granted his request to get Lloyd Kelly through the door early in the current trading period.

Getting Olise will be extremely tough for Newcastle with the player's representatives already underlining the fact he wants to play Champions League football sooner rather than later. Even Chelsea can't offer that but they can offer a Europa Conference League stage, something which has weakened Newcastle's bargaining ability.

Speaking after landing Kelly, who joined after his contract expired at Bournemouth, Howe said yesterday: "I’m really pleased to have secured Lloyd’s signature. He’s a player who’s proven himself at Premier League level and I’m certain he’ll be a great addition as we prepare for the new season."
