Newcastle United make £87million signal of intent as Eddie Howe remains calm in transfer window

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is understood to be calm about transfer business despite the Magpies pulling out of their pursuit for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Howe essentially made the call to put a halt to the Calvert-Lewin chase after Everton's demands were deemed to expensive at £37million for a player who has struggled with injuries in the past few years and does not have a prolific goalscoring record. The enquiry for Calvert-Lewin, as well as the ambitious £50m bid for Michael Olise last week, at least shows Newcastle do have money to spend and are being active in the transfer market despite PSR worries.

Ideally, Howe wants to quietly get on with business but with summer holidays now coming to an end and the start of pre-season training in sight, the head coach is simply getting on with business. Everton's lack of co-operation on a fee for Calvert-Lewin could well have cost them the chance to sign Yankuba Minteh as Newcastle withdrew talks with the Toffees completely yesterday.

Minteh's representatives were told he will still be granted the opportunity to move and earn a lucrative signing on fee for his agent via one of the European clubs involved in the chase for his services. French club Lyon were pushed forward as the favourites to sign the winger last night but there are other viable options.

Newcastle want £40m for Minteh and won't be open to any knockdown offers for the teenager. United boss Howe is happy to use him in pre-season training if the need arises and take a closer look at him if he stays.

The Magpies are set to return around July 6 for pre-season training with a summer training camp and tour of Japan already planned. Friendlies closer to home are also set to be announced soon with a trip to Hull City already on the table in late July.
