Newcastle United told asking price for key target could hit £20m mark with star keen on the move

Newcastle United transfer target James Trafford is understood to be keen on the move to St James' Park.

The 21-year-old is ready for his next challenge after Burnley's relegation and talks remain ongoing over a fee with the Clarets. Discussions were paused after Newcastle offered around £16million for Trafford's services last week but there is hope the negotiations will continue in the coming days.

A new price of £20m has been mooted at Turf Moor as Burnley consider all their options after losing their fight to stay up last season.

Newcastle will leave the room if the demands become too high as they have other priorities and a limited spending kitty this summer. Trafford is currently earning around £40,000 per week with Burnley and personal terms with the Magpies will not be an issue.

United's financial situation - with PSR and FFP rules hovering above them - could be eased with the sale of Martin Dubravka. The Slovakia international has accepted his time may be up at St James' Park with Nick Pope set to be number 1 next season and the idea of Trafford providing top notch competition pencilled in by Eddie Howe and his coaching staff.

As reported by Chronicle Live on Saturday, Newcastle have been offered the chance to sign 37-year-old former England international John Ruddy on a free transfer. Ruddy spent last season at Birmingham City and played in their ill-fated battle against relegation in the Championship.

Eddie Howe and his coaching staff are keen to bring in a replacement for Loris Karius who has departed United after his contract ran out. A 'number three' goalkeeper to work in training with long serving squad member Mark Gillespie is high on the wish-list.

Newcastle denied they'd made a move for former Bosnia international Asmir Begovic over the weekend.
