In news guaranteed to raise the spirits, a boozy festival has announced its return with an extra-big serving.

The Whisky Indie Love Fest will be back in Newcastle this September for a third year. And, already billed as one of the largest independent whisky-focused festivals in the world, the stage is being set for a two-day event that's even 'bigger and better', say organisers.

It takes place at Anarchy Brewery's taproom in Walkergate, Newcastle, where festival-goers can once again expect a range of rare whiskies and a mix of flavours from independent makers and bottlers. The festival, organised by Karl Glenn who is the founder of the North East Whisky Appreciation Society, made its debut in the city in 2022 and followed up last year with another hit.

This year's September 13-14 festival will offer a pick of three sessions in all and, while it will no doubt attract whisky lovers and specialists, the hope is that whisky first-timers will explore what's on offer too. There will be more exhibitors this year, offering a diverse selection of whiskies, and alongside returning favourites like Cadenhead’s, James Eadie Ltd and The Single Cask will be new visitors such as Dram Mor and North Star.

Karl, from Earsdon in North Tyneside, said: “For whisky newcomers we have a special Taster Ticket which is available for just £20, allowing access to the last hour of the festival on both Friday and Saturday. This ticket offers a perfect introduction to the world of whisky without costing a packet.”

There's also a £45 early bird ticket currently available while regular tickets cost £59 and other options include a £65 on-the-door ticket up to £200 for a ticket bundle for five whisky club members. Festival sessions at the brewery, which is close to Walkergate Metro station, will run from 6pm-9.30pm on the Friday, September 13 then at noon until 3.30pm followed by from 4.30pm-8pm on Saturday, September 14.

Alongside the chance to try exceptional whiskies, the event is set to be a social get-together where guests can meet industry experts and discover new tipples from among a selection of small-batch and single-cask offerings. Those attending will also receive a special festival glass.

Whisky lover Karl, who himself has amassed a personal collection of more than 1,500 bottles, warns: “While the festival offers an incredible opportunity to sample a wide range of whiskies, it's important to pace yourself and enjoy responsibly, as the high-quality offerings can be quite potent.” For tickets to the event see here.
