'It Will Not Be An Issue': Tom Hardy To Put On Weight For Elton John Role In 'Rocketman' Movie?

Tom Hardy could have a difficult few months ahead of him with sources claiming the actor will have to put on weight to play the role of legendary icon Elton John in the upcoming biopic 'Rocketman,' based on the singer's life.

It was confirmed this week that Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy star Hardy has been chosen to get into the colourful character of Elton to depict the iconic singer's triumphs and tribulations throughout his life and it looks as though it could be his most challenging role to date, as he may have to put on a few extra pounds to his trim figure.

A source told The Mirror: “It is no surprise Elton would be happy with someone who looks like Tom playing him but it might be a challenge."

“Hardy is a heartthrob, it will be quite a stretch to make him look like Elton but he is a professional so putting on weight and changing his hair will not be an issue,” they added.

Hardy, 36, is no stranger to changing his weight for a movie role as he is believed to have put on as much as 30lbs to play the role of the menacing Bane in last year's Batman: The Dark Knight Rises, so getting a little softer around the edges to portray Elton shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Confirming Hardy's addition to the biopic, which is being produced by Elton and partner David Furnish's company Rocket Pictures, Peter Schlessel, CEO of Focus Pictures which is also involved in the film, told Variety: “Tom is quickly becoming known as one of the world’s most versatile actors, and like others at the top of their craft, he has proven his ability to transform himself completely into the character or the subject found in the material.

“We are confident that Tom will embody the physicality and spirit of Sir Elton. This, in conjunction with the creative team led by the Michael and Rocket Pictures, will provide the foundation for something that will be a unique cinematic event.”
