Prince William has reportedly informed his commanding officer of his intention to leave the Royal Air-Force, just weeks before Kate Middleton gives birth.

The 30-year-old is said to be keen on a fresh challenge and has made the decision to leave his post as a search and rescue pilot off the Welsh island of Anglesey over the summer – shortly after the couple welcome the birth of their first child in June.

According to reports in The Sunday Times, the second-in-line to the throne has based his intention leave the peaceful island community – where he and Kate rent a farmhouse – on his impending responsibilities as a father and increased expectation to fulfil more duties as a British Royal.

The decision to leave would have been a difficult one to reach for William, who recently admitted that saving lives was 'the ultimate calling.'

“I don't think there's any greater calling in life,” he said during an interview for BBC documentary Helicopter Rescue. “To be able to see a son or daughter's face when you bring their mother or father back from the edge of death – it's quite powerful.”

The Prince became a fully qualified search and rescue pilot last year following 20 months of training – an achievement that gave him licence to fly the immense Sea King helicopters used by the RAF.

“The course has been challenging but I enjoyed it immensely,” he said at the time. “I absolutely love flying, so it will be an honour to serve operationally with the search and rescue force, helping to provide such a vital emergency service.”

It's understood that William could well return to the Household Cavalry, meaning he can combine his military career with his Royal duties when he finally makes the move back to London, specifically the 21-room Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace, later this year.

The Prince will also replace his grandfather Prince Philip as president of Fields in Trust – a patronage the Duke of Edinburgh held for 64-years before handing the reigns over to his grandson.
