Robbie Williams Lands Britain's 1000th Number One Album

Robbie Williams made chart history yesterday when his new album became the 1,000th LP to top the UK Album Charts.

The pop star went straight to the top of the charts with Swings Both Ways, his 10th studio album.

Robbie's new release comes 57 years after the late and legendary crooner Frank Sinatra had the first UK number one album back in 1956 with Songs For Swingin' Lovers.

Last night, after learning he had reached the top slot, Robbie said he was honoured to be "following Frank Sinatra who was the first person in that spot and my hero".

The 39-year-old has now also equalled Elvis Presley's record of 11 number one albums as a solo artist.

Swings Both Ways marks Williams' first work with former longtime collaborator Guy Chambers since his 2002 album Escapology.

The album features cover versions of well known songs, as well as duets with Lily Allen, Michael Bublé, Kelly Clarkson and Olly Murs.

Critics have described Swings Both Ways - which saw sales of 109,000 copies in its first week - as swinging so much "you can almost smell the brillantine" and the work of "a karaoke kind of crooner".

Kitty Empire, The Observer's pop critic, said it "inaugurates the present-buying season and, with it, the annual leave-taking of taste".

Meanwhile, Jake Bugg went in at number three with his second album Shangri La, while Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP 2 stayed at number two for three weeks running.

Lady Gaga's ARTPOP dropped friom the top slot eight places to number nine while JLS's Goodbye - Greatest Hits went in at number six.

On the singles chart, Lily Allen's cover of Keane's Somewhere Only We Know, used for the John Lewis Christmas advert, went up one place to claim the top spot while Bastille's Of The Night went in at number two with Gary Barlow shooting straight into number three with his song Let Me Go.
