Matt Cardle has denied he slammed the new X Factor winner James Arthur in a recent interview, claiming his "words were twisted."

The 'Run For Your Life' singer sat down for an interview with The Sun this week, during which he hit back at comments made by James, who said previous male X Factor winners "haven't made great albums."

Matt Cardle claims his words about James Arthur were twisted in an interview he gave to a newspaper (Peter Kaminski/)

Matt allegedly told the newspaper he was "offended" by James' remarks and said he doesn't have the right to judge his success until he has sold two million records of his own.

"I said, 'Look, James, you're very talented but you haven't sold two million records yet, which I have," Matt is said to have told the newspaper.

"'You haven't had two top ten albums yet, which I've had. Don't start mouthing off before you've even really left the show.'"

"I doubt he's even listened to my albums. It's a shame and I hope it doesn't do him too much damage," Matt continued.

"Not only has he offended me but he's offended every other person that's won the X Factor and everyone who works or has written on these albums."

However, Matt wasn't too impressed when the Daily Mail reported on the spat, using a headline that he claims misconstrued his comments.

"Man, I absolutely LOVE having my words twisted to make me look like a complete a*s-hole!! It's a funny old world. Lol it's amazing!!" Matt tweeted on Thursday.

"NO... I didn't say "He is talented, but I'm more successful than him" how absolutely ridiculous hahaha!!"

Targeting the Daily Mail directly, Matt added: "The daily Mail did."

James is yet to respond to Matt's comments.
