A North Korean defector has spoken about the brutal conditions she endured after she was sent back to the country from China.

Speaking at the United Nations, Ji Hyeon-A said she and others who were returned were forced to eat rats, with many also dying from dehydration.

Ji, who spent eight months in a re-education centre, said: “Everyone was subjected to harsh labour, and meals were so lacking that we ate raw locusts, discarded cabbage leaves and skinned frogs and rats.

“People died withered and dehydrated from continuous diarrhoea.”

Disturbingly, Ji claimed that dead bodies ended up becoming food for guard dogs.

Ji said she was repatriated three times to North Korea after she was caught in China and thrown into prison.

After being released following her second escape attempt, she was this time caught by traffickers in China and sold to an old farmer befits Chinese authorities caught up with her and sent her back to North Korea.

Ji, who was three months pregnant when she was placed into a detention centre, was also forced to have an abortion as the North Korean regime does not tolerate mixed race babies

She tearfully added: “My first child passed away without ever seeing the world, without any time for me to apologise.

“Pregnant women were forced into harsh labour all day. At night, we heard pregnant mothers screaming and babies died without ever being able to see their mothers.”

She called on China to stop the practice of sending defectors back to North Korea.

Nikki Haley, the US Ambassador to the UN, blasted the North Korean regime in the wake of Ji’s testimony.

She said: “The systematic human rights violations and abuses of the North Korean government are more than the cause of its people’s suffering. They are a means to a single end: Keeping the Kim Jong Un regime in power.”
