Here is what the Old Barbershop in Marlow looks like nearly four years on from its closure.

The business, which the late Richard Silver ran, was a regular go-to place for those in the area who wanted to get a trim with the shop first opening on May 16, 1966.

It was situated along Station Road in the town for an incredible 54 years but closed for the final time just a few days before its 54th anniversary in 2020.

Mr Silver had been diagnosed with terminal oesophagus cancer and was unable to work due to his treatment from the back end of 2019 to the start of 2020.

This was then coupled with the coronavirus pandemic which caused the country to go into a national lockdown that March.

Many independent shops across were forced to temporarily shut for what was an undisclosed period, with the barber deciding in May of that year that the time was right to officially close his long-lasting shop.

He had been in the town all his life but began his apprenticeship in High Wycombe in the early 1960s.

A shop along the Marlow High Street with his father followed before the duo moved to Station Road in 1966 which stood proudly for 54 years.

Now, nearly four years on from the closure, the business has been converted into a house with a sign saying ‘The Old Barbershop’ being put on the front door.

Following the news of the shop’s closure four years ago, many locals did their bit to raise much-needed funds for the popular barber, as the country faced financial uncertainty.

A GoFundMe page was launched to raise £500, yet incredibly, £3,194 was donated to Mr Silver and his family.

One notable feature about the shop was it was decked out in Manchester United memorabilia – the football club that was close to Mr Silver’s heart.

Many of the pennants and posters remained in the shop for several months after his closure, but work began transforming the business into property in 2021.

The much-loved hairdresser has also cut the hair of well-known residents, including Sir Steve Redgrave and his father, the late sports commentator Raymond Glendenning, the late band leader Eric Robinson and most notably the actor Tom Chambers, star of Waterloo Road, Holby City, Casualty and Emmerdale.

Mr Silver succumbed to his illness on December 6, 2020, at the age of 74, but his name remains popular in the town with many believing he was one of the best hairdressers in Marlow.
