After Ant McPartlin made headlines over the weekend for a drink-driving car crash and the announcement he’s returning to rehab, Piers Morgan and Phillip Schofield have spoken out against the telly star.

One half of Good Morning Britain’s presenting team had some choice words for the TV presenter who was involved in a three-car smash up that resulted in an arrest after failing a roadside breathalyser.

During this morning’s GMB, the outspoken Morgan, 52, he said: ‘I’d say to [Ant] “as a friend, you’re throwing away your career, you can’t afford many more headlines like this”.’

We don’t know if he was over the limit,’ he added. ‘It’s Dec I feel sorry for more than Ant because Ant is in control of his own behaviour and is making bad choices.

‘Dec is the collateral damage. Dec has done nothing wrong yet his show is off air Saturday.’

‘I’ve known Ant for a very long time, a great down to Earth lad. Lisa, his wife, does my make up on Life Stories. I would never have thought he would ever do that.

‘This Ant McPartlin was not the guy I know. Even if you really like Ant, he could have killed people.

And after viewers crititicsed This Morning’s Holly Willoughby and Phillip for failing to even mention the news on yesterday’s show, the latter has now come forth with some words on the matter.

Schofield, 55, began by saying both he and Holly, 38, were ‘shocked and saddened’ by the news over the last 24 hours, admitting it was difficult to speak about because they were ‘talking about a friend’.

‘The overwhelming feeling we believe has to be that, no matter who you are, no matter what you do, if you get into a car having had a drink the responsibility is entirely yours.’

‘We wish Ant and all those involved in these sad events all the very best.’

Admittedly his response is a little more tactful than Morgan’s, but it’s certainly a topic that’s divided the nation.

On one hand, some will blast him and, as Schofield says, must take responsibility for his own actions – especially getting into the driving seat (allegedly) over the drinking limit and with passengers (his mum and pet Labrador).

Others will offer a more sympathetic approach, noting the star’s addictions and personal problems (notably his marriage breakdown) that a lot of people may also struggle to deal with.

Lisa Armstrong, Ant’s wife who he’s now split from and in the process of divorcing, has commented on the arrest and subsequent developments by simply saying: ‘I’m sorry, I’m not interested,’ when asked for her thoughts on the matter, according to the Mirror.

Declan Donnelly, 42, his famous TV partner, is reportedly ‘devastated’ by the events of the past few days, as he was seen out for the first time since Ant hit the headlines.
