Plumes of smoke billow from van fire which caused M6 lane closures near Coventry

Plumes of grey smoke billowed onto the M6 from a van fire. It led to lanes being closed on the northbound stretch of the motorway between junction 2 near Coventry and junction 1 at Rugby.

An image captured from the scene earlier today (July 3) shows Transit Connect on fire on the hard shoulder near to junction 1. Two fire engines were at the scene as traffic could be seen building.

Two lanes of the motorway were closed while they fought the flames, at around 1.30pm. It led to reports of congestion building

Just over an hour later, one of the lanes remained closed as the clear-up operation got underway. But all of the lanes have now re-opened.

Traffic has now returned to normal.
